Whattaya do when someone asks: who created God?
That’s a reasonable question, a common question, and also one that’s easily answered.
The first thing we have to do is define God. God is a spirit: infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being, power, wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness and truth. God is the greatest conceivable being. It would seem that the question doesn’t take into account the very definition of God.
So, whattaya do now?
Considering the correct definition of God, here are four ways you can respond:
-
If time came into existence then whatever brought time into existence (God) would be outside of time or timeless. Therefore God is outside of time and would have no beginning. He is eternal.
-
Asking who created God creates an infinite regress. You could just as easily ask who created the God who created God, and so on infinitely. An actual infinite regress is impossible, and even science isn’t done that way.
-
God is the greatest conceivable being. If he was created he wouldn’t be the greatest conceivable being and therefore we’re no longer talking about God.
-
A created god is called an idol, and the bible speaks about them. A created god is a false god.
And lastly, here’s a question for the atheist: if it’s fair to ask “who created God” since we claim God created us, then it’s also fair to ask “who created the universe” since you claim the universe created you.
So, now you know whattaya do. I’m glad you asked!
