Our favorite science guy is at it again, only this time against philosophy rather than religion. He says “philosophy is important for a while” but then dismisses the deep questions that philosophy seeks to answer. He even goes so far as to say “humans made up philosophy”, and because we’re human, there are things “beyond which it doesn’t matter”.
The article below outlines five misconceptions Nye has about philosophy:
1. “It often gets back to this question: What is the nature of consciousness?”
2. “The idea that reality is not real, that what you sense and feel is not authentic, is something I’m very skeptical of.”
3. “Philosophy is important for a while…. But you can start arguing in a circle.”
4. “It doesn’t always give an answer that’s surprising.”
5. “Keep in mind, humans made up philosophy too.”

Why are so many smart people such idiots about philosophy?
There’s no doubt that Bill Nye “the Science Guy” is extremely intelligent. But it seems that, when it comes to philosophy, he’s completely in the dark. The beloved American science educator and TV personality posted a video last week where he responded to a question from a philosophy undergradabout whether philosophy is a “meaningless topic.”
