Prof. Nagel uses this principle to the evolution/intelligent design argument. Supposing, for purposes of discussion, even though he himself is an atheist, to label the intellect “God,” he says “the motives and goals of God, if there’s a god, as well as the character of his will, aren’t potential issues of a scientific theory or scientific explanation. However that will not indicate that there cannot be scientific evidence for or against the intervention of such a non-law-regulated cause in the natural order” (p. 190). To put it differently, Sherlock Holmes can use chemistry to work out an intellect — a man — did the action that killed the victim, even if he can not use chemistry to figure out that the man who did it was Professor Moriarty, or to figure out why Moriarty did the offense.
